ChromeOS has a strong reputation for creating affordable Chromebooks that are light and affordable. But this is changing. Many manufacturers now make “gaming” Chromebooks that are fast and have powerful processors. It’s fitting that Steam (the de facto home for PC gaming) expands to more Chromebooks after it exits a limited alpha category.
Steam for Chrome OS beta is now available with Chrome 108 beta. The software includes improvements in notification and storage management. It also expands the compatibility list to include Core i3 devices and Ryzen 3-based devices. Other notable updates include support for DirectX 12 and Vulkan 1.3. A fix that allows games to install content from non-Steam server (including many Games with secondary players such as Final Fantasy XIV) also makes the software more reliable.
Steam is now much easier to set up. Previously, you had to be on dev channel in order to open a Linux-style terminal. Type a strange command. Steam is not yet mainstream on ChromeOS. There are still many steps to go. It still lacks many basic features, even in the Linux version. Although it does include some big names like “The Last of Us”, the Chrome list of officially supported games is only a fraction of what you will find on other platforms.
