“Covid-19 restrictions have temporarily affected the primary iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly facility located in Zhengzhou, China,” Apple says in its statement. “The facility is currently operating with a significantly reduced capacity.”
This is bad news for consumers who want to purchase the latest iPhone model before Christmas. There will be significant shipping delays in the future. The Apple Store estimates that Pro models will take 4-5 weeks to ship. This could increase in the event of prolonged Covid disruptions.
Apple stated that there is still strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro Max model and iPhone 14 Pro Max model. “However, we expect iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments will be lower than we originally expected. Customers will have longer wait times to get their new products.”
The Covid-19 outbreak has struck Zhengzhou in China, which is home to Apple’s main production facility for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Zhengzhou reported 167 cases in October’s last week. Foxconn, which owns the Apple plant, tried to force its closure late last month in an attempt to slow down the spread of the virus.
Video footage of factory workers fleeing the facility was circulated on Chinese social media. The video was a result of reports about poor conditions, inadequate food, and lack of medical resources during the quarantine.
Apple isn’t the only tech company to have its supply chains affected by Chinese restrictions. Covid has placed strict Chinese restrictions on Covid’s supply chain, which has seen Zhengzhou, home to the Foxconn facility, in a government-mandated shut down until at least 12:00 on November 9.
These delays are just weeks after the launch mid-September of iPhone 14, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro Max being particularly popular among Apple experts and fans.
