Twitter users reported widespread outages

Twitter users from widely distributed locations reported that they had encountered problems with the service Wednesday night, just days after Elon Musk announced that he had shut down one the company’s data centers located in Sacramento. According to Down Detector the problems affected only desktop users of the company’s website, while some users complained that its mobile app was also experiencing problems.

It was unclear what caused the outages. Some users reported being logged out of Twitter. Others claimed they could not see replies to their tweets, but can access other areas of the service. Others reported that they received error messages while scrolling through their timelines (which is the primary feed of tweets that people see when they log in to Twitter).

The errors began at 7 p.m. ET, according to Down Detector. This service monitors web outages. The hashtag #TwitterDown was popularized by users who shared their experiences during the outage.
