Since 2021, compatible motherboards or CPUs have existed. Many vendors have announced their first summer deals. AMD even stated during the launch of Ryzen 7000 processor, that it expects models in November 2022. However, fast-melting PCIe5 SSDs are still not in production.
This was evident at CES 2023 where most of the major PC news remained focused upon laptop and chip launches. If you were expecting a large selection of PCIe5 SSD drives, you will be disappointed. Vendors that have pre-advertisements are mostly silent.
At the end of this long, winding road, the twinkling city lights could finally be in sight. CES 2023 gave at least some indications that concrete launches may be just around the bend. Two PCIe 5 SSDs were on display at the MSI booth (which you can view for yourself at Reporting by Tom Hardware) – and has an estimated release date of Q2. The MSI Spatium 570 Pro will reach speeds of 10GB/s read/write speeds while the Spatium 570 Pro will reach speeds of 12GB/s, and 10GB/s writes speeds.

Faison
Phison is the company behind the industry-wide SSD controller chips. They are showing off their new E26 controller performance chipset along with an engineering sample of its PCIe5 SSD. It can double the bandwidth and provide a 30% improvement in latency over its Gen 4 technology. Phison will also be demonstrating its enterprise console which can exceed sequential write and read speeds of 14GB/s.
Given Phison’s partnerships—MSI, Corsair, Gigabyte, and Sabrent, to name a few—it’s likely that a truly ready-made case of PCIe 5 drives will finally be approaching. This would be a welcome addition for anyone with large file transfers and large wallets. Today’s SSDs are still very fastPCIe 5 can’t be beat for everyday computing and gaming, but it is a great choice when time is tight.
Perhaps there is a chance to regain some hope — the second quarter estimate of MSI drives may prove more reliable than previous promises. But that is all I can tell.
