TL; DR
- Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Phone.
- Allows you to attach Leica Camera Lens Modules to your rear camera.
Today’s smartphones all have flexible rear camera systems. These include a main camera and an ultrawide camera as well as a telephoto shooter. These cameras can’t be attached to other lenses like a DSLR.
Currently, xiaomiXiaomi’s 12S Ultra Concept was announced in partnership with Leica. This allows you attach a viewfinder module onto your smartphone’s camera. The company also stated that the phone can be attached to a Leica M series lens module. Take a look at the image below.
The phone also features two 1-inch camera sensors, one attached to the lens unit, and one mounted in the center. We suspect that the company is using an extension. IMX989Camera sensors as shown in standard Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
It is not clear if other Leica lens modules can be attached to your smartphone to increase your flexibility. Xiaomi promises that this combination will increase “optical power”.
Are you planning to buy a smartphone that supports camera lens module support?

Xiaomi has not disclosed any additional details, such as the capabilities or specifications of the smartphone. We can see what appear to be the focus and aperture dials on this lens unit. The latter appears to be heading towards f/16.
It is not known if this technology will be available on a commercial smartphone. This is a very radical approach to smartphone photography, and we are eager to see the results.
