Acara lifted the lid on its smart-home roadmap at Matter’s launch event in Amsterdam. It will begin with a free software update for the Hub M2 in December that will make many of Aqara’s Zigbee-compatible devices compatible. This will be followed in 2023 by the launch Aqara’s first Matter-over-Thread devices. A new multi-protocol hub will also be launched in the future.

Aqara says that Matter-compatible Aqara hubs will include the Hub M1S/M1SGen 2, Hub E1, Camera Hub G3 & Camera Hub G2H Pro in the “next month”.
After the hub is updated, any Aqara zigbee connected via the M2 can now be used in any Matter ecosystem. Ikea uses the same approach to make its smart home devices more useful. Matter hubs will still need to be used on Matter networks by anyone who has already invested in Zigbee equipment.
Aqara also announced details about its first Matter over Thread devices. teased at CESBack in January. The P2 thread-based window and door sensor, and the P2 motion & light sensor are set to launch in early 2023. Acara promises a variety of new thread-based devices including “various smart sensor, dimmers, smart plugs, and bulbs”
According to Aqara, the Hub M3 is a future device that will be a smart home hub that supports multi-protocol support. The M3 is designed for existing Aqara Zigbee products to Matter, and also serves as a device.
