SpaceX’s Starlink Internet promises unlimited bandwidth. Customers who exceed 1TB in data usage per month will no longer be charged.
Starlink sent an email on Friday to US and Canada users describing a new so called “fair usage” policy. This describes how each month resident users will receive coverage with Basic Access for the first month, then move to Priority Access for the remainder of the year. If it exceeds 1 TB, the monthly billing period will be extended.
Basic Access clients will be granted priority usage. Priority Access clients will have slower speeds if there is heavy traffic on the network. Starlink also points out that data used during peak times, specifically between 11pm – 7am, will not count towards the monthly 1TB priority package.
The company also offers data usage monitoring on user account pages, so users can track how close they are to the limit.
Company for network analytics from third parties Ookla noted that Starlink media speeds have decreased in every country it is currently available in over the past year. Ookla attributes the decline to user growth. Starlink is clearly trying to improve the situation by limiting high volume users, which it claims represent less than 10% its current subscriber base.
