The Morning After: Apple introduces a limit to AirDrop in China

Apple’s latest iOS update was released in China with an additional feature that was not available in other regions. According to BloombergIt limits the amount of time a user can send files via AirDrop to non-contacts to 10 minutes. AirDrop is being used in China by activists and protesters to circumvent internet censorship. It was extensively used during protests in Hong Kong for sharing images of police brutality. This isn’t the first time Apple has offered a feature — or, in this case, a limitation — to ensure it stays in the good fortunes of the Chinese government. According to reports, Apple recently asked Taiwanese suppliers for assurances that parts shipped to the mainland would not bear Made in Taiwan labels. It must instead be sourced from Taiwan, China or Chinese Taipei.

Apple: BloombergAirDrop will not be limited to China. AirDrop plans to introduce new restrictions next year to all users worldwide “to reduce unwanted file sharing”.
