Elon Musk spoke at a Show & Tell on Wednesday that his brain-computer interface company Neuralink could implant one of its devices in someone’s head within the next six months — which means that won’t happen this year. He also claimed that the device would eventually be implanted into his head.
Musk stated that the company had submitted all paperwork necessary to conduct a human clinical study to the Food and Drug Administration. This agency regulates medical devices in the United States. Musk stated previously that he expected human trials to begin in 2020, and then in the year 2022. Now, it’s back to at most 2023.
Neuralink’s goal to create a device which can be implanted in a brain and used to control a computer via brain activity is its goal. Musk announced that the company was founded in 2019. He tests his device on monkeys. 2020 Jog for pigsImplants. Neuralink released a video last January. It shows a monkey playing pong with its brain. This year, the monkeys They returned. A video demonstration shows how to help someone “write” “Welcome show and tell” using an implant. This is done by focusing on highlighted letters and words. Another video demonstrated how monkeys were taught to charge their devices by sitting down under a wireless charger.
Later in the presentation, Neuralink researchers showed a Neuralink pig on a treadmill. They said this helps them study how to solve mobility problems in people in future.
The Neuralink devices are small and have multiple flexible “threads”, which can be inserted into your brain. Musk said that it was like exchanging a part of your skull in exchange for a smartwatch.
Using an automated process, 64 of these “leads”, could be implanted in the brain in just 15 minutes, according to DJ Seo, vice president at Implant and cofounder of Neuralink.
Robotic surgeons love the small size of sutures. Kristen Odabashian (Device Entry Lead for Neuralink) said:
In 2019, and 2020, company demos are intended to be recruitment events. The company acknowledged that this was its primary goal for tonight. Musk stated that Neuralink is currently seeking to fill many types of positions as it transitions “prototypes to products” on The Tonight Show.
The event was primarily about the hardware and showed how it was built, the challenges encountered by the team, the progress made so far, and future developments. The company’s researchers said they are working on treatments to improve or restore vision or movement in paralyzed people. The company is working to make the device’s technology more accessible.
“I’m sure you wouldn’t want the iPhone 1 in your head if the iPhone 14 was available,” Musk said.
