There is one crucial difference between Android and iOSThe former’s ability sideload apps. Sideloading refers to the act of installing apps from a source other than the official approved source. This is the case with Android. Google Play Store. iPhone users have never had the ability to sideload apps — at least not without some effort to circumvent Apple’s “walled garden.”
This highlighter might not last as long. According to Mark Gurman (via), a prominent and frequently accurate Apple analyst/leaker. bloombergApple could allow iPhone app sideloading. This would allow iPhone users the freedom to install any app they like, not just those that are available on the official App store. It would also allow developers not to pay Apple 30% of their app sales.
Although this would be a huge and important event, it’s not surprising. The European Union’s Digital Markets Act is set to come into force next year and will largely force Apple to offer iPhone app sideloading apps — or at least, third-party app stores.
Gurman claims that Apple is currently working on this issue for the EU. Apple is not obliged to offer sideloading for those countries, since the US and other countries do not have a Digital Markets Act. This would make it a completely different experience to own an iPhone in the EU than the rest of the globe. Apple may think this is a fair trade-off, even if it means reducing App Store profits for as long possible.
Apple is also rumored to be considering significant changes to iMessage and Find My, NFC access, NFC access, among other things, in response to the Digital Markets Act.
