Twitter has suspended several Twitter accounts which use publicly available flight data to track private aircraft’s locations, including one owned and operated by Elon Musk.
The account @employeeJack Sweeney, a Florida college student, created this website in 2020 Track takeoffs and landings of the private jet. Musk was not happy about the account, but he said in November that he would not ban them, citing his commitment for free speech.
On Wednesday, however, the account was suddenly removed from service and replaced by the “Account Suspended” message. This message was issued for violating Twitter’s rules. Sweeney’s personal account. The Twitter privacy policy was updated to prohibit the posting or linking of information about a person’s travel itinerary or physical location.
Musk responded to a comment on the policy change by explaining the new policy.
“Posting in real time to someone else’s site is against doxxing policy, but posting late to sites is okay,” Musk he said in a tweetWednesday afternoon
ElonJet was temporarily restored Wednesday afternoon, before being again suspended. Other accounts Sweeney set up to track private jets of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg were also suspended.
Musk offered Sweeney $5,000 earlier this year to deactivate his twitter account. But the 20-year old refused, saying that $5,000 was not enough for the satisfaction he got from his work.
Sweeney was not available for comment immediately. Twitter no longer has a communications division and did not respond when we asked for comment.
