Amazon brings Matter to Echo devices, plugs and lights.

The new standard for smart home interoperability ThingIt is slowly making its presence felt in a variety of smart home devices. Amazon is the latest company to offer Matter support on its devices.

The company claims that this first wave of implementation will provide significant support for 17 Echo devices, plugs and switches, as well as lights.

Amazon explained its approach with the following:

We will gradually roll out Matter support for most popular devices while continuing to work with our partners on interoperability stability and longevity testing to ensure customers have a seamless experience with Alexa.

Matter is a standard created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance with hundreds other companies, including Google, Samsung, Apple and Amazon. The ultimate goal of the standard is to make it simple for consumers to create and customize their smart home networks without worrying about which gadgets work with which one.

Amazon explains on its blog that this development will expand the number and variety of connectivity options available to users. If I had spoken the Google Nest thermostat, it would work with Amazon’s Alexa.

Amazon will likely add Matter support for more of its devices in 2023, since this is only the first stage of its rollout.
