TL; DR
- LG META, a new OLED panel technie introduced at CES 2023, is a new LG META.
- OLED TVs promise up to 60% brightness without the need for any additional software.
- This technology will be first introduced in the LG G3 series of TVs.
OLED TVs emit light from thousands upon thousands of sensors, which blasts through just a few layers of hardware right in front of your face. Light travels through these layers and scatters, reflects, and reduces brightness dramatically. Unfortunately, this causes a duller picture than the sensors can handle.
In CES 2023LG has revealed META, a new technology. LG META allows for more light to reach your eyes from the sensors, which results in a TV that is up to 60% brighter. This is achieved by a combination of software and hardware.
LG claims that a TV with this technology can produce up to 2,100 nits brightening. The following is a comparison: Google Pixel 7 ProThe peak brightness advertised is 1,500 nits. This is very bright.
LG META’s uniqueness is that the underlying panel technology doesn’t have to change in order to see this feature. You can make your OLED TV brighter by swapping the hardware layers. This is a good thing, as it allows for quick subtraction and easily identifiable gains in image quality.
The 2023 G3 OLED TV is the only model that the company has confirmed will include the META technology.
