A recent update for Microsoft DefenderSome Windows users lost their program shortcuts.
This strange issue caused Windows icons and application shortcuts to be removed from the taskbar, and the Start menu without any warning.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 users seem both to have been affected. Antivirus softwareCustomers all over the globe are experiencing problems.
Microsoft Defender ASR problem
While only certain shortcuts are affected and not the actual apps themselves, many users are complaining about the timing for Error Friday the 13th.

Reddit user tells us that the Start Menu has been affected too: “I can’t use the windows key to open Firefox and then type the name I want to go to under Program Files.
Microsoft has released a statment(Opens in new tab) which states: “Windows Security and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint customers may have experienced a series of false positive detections of the Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) rule ‘Block Win32 API calls from Office macros’ after updating to Security Intelligence Builds between 1.381.2134.0 and 1.381.2163.0.”
The author continues to explain that the bug “primarily impacts Windows Shortcut (.lnk), files”, and that users should not be affected if they haven’t enabled “Block Win32api calls from Office macros”.
Another user was able solve the problem but found that some icons in taskbar were invisible.
The company has provided a workaround AntivirusMany companies report that they are still not being satisfied with their needs. Some complain that the fix doesn’t restore Microsoft Office shortcuts per person, while others request Intune steps to deploy it.
Microsoft needs to do more than just fix the persistent Defender bug with new comments being added each day. TechRadar ProMicrosoft asked for clarification.
