Public data is tracking Elon Musk’s private plane. Is it doxxing

The whereabouts of Elon Musk’s private jet depends on public data — which Musk banned from Twitter this week.

Aircraft flight data from MSC is worth millions of dollars Gulfstream G650 JetThe public has always known the location of commercial airliners. Musk, who bought Twitter in October for $44 billion, maintains that revealing his plane’s location amounts to defamation. This is an online harassment type that involves sharing personal information that could cause harm.

“The same rules of defamation apply to ‘journalists’ as they apply to everyone else,” he said in a tweet on Thursday. “They published my exact real-time location, the coordinates of the assassination, basically.” The Washington Post has seen no evidence that the reporters did what they alleged.

The Internet has made a lot of data public, including property records and family links. Phones can also post people’s locations in real-time. Sometimes data can be used to empower criminals and scammers. Data can have a limited value. It may be outdated or incorrect. Publicly available flight information reveals the aircraft’s location, not the passengers.

Twitter changed its rules abruptly to stop accounts sharing live location details. However, it can’t stop the torrents of aviation enthusiasts who track planes all over the world and post information about them elsewhere.

Musk and Twitter did no immediate respond to a request for comments.

Here’s a brief overview of what’s happening with Musk’s personal aircraft and how people are tracking.
