What subscriptions didn’t make it to the cut? And why?

Our picks were based on personal experience, reviews from top wine and food websites, and customer reviews via third-party sites such as TrustPilot or HighYa. We also considered factors like customer service, navigation ease, and breadth of choice.

Media companies are often credited with inciting the 2008 wine club revival (think The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times), but they only use one of a few large wine merchants to fulfill their orders. These companies, along with other older clubs such as Turner Classic Movies’ and Laithwaites, basically pull from the same lot, often increasing prices. These services were not valued or offered unique products and were therefore excluded from our list. Although some older clubs, such as Vinesse or California Wine Club, offer a high-quality selection of wines, they also have complicated websites that can be difficult to navigate and cancellation policies that require tedious phone calls.

Winc, Firstleaf and other quiz-based wine clubs offer customizable breadth to members. However, Bright CellarsThe quiz used to identify customers’ preferences and likes did not make it onto our list. This particular club is known for its poor quality wines. The palate quiz often gives us the same or almost identical recommendations for very different people. We also found that the customer service could be improved.

Wine ExcellenceThe club taps into millennials’ wanderlust with its international offerings and receives tons of press (it even has its own magazine). Despite its exquisitely designed aesthetic, members and reviewers found wines boring.

Tasting RoomIt was not considered for our trial-size wine selection, but it has earned a reputation as an online bait-and-switch company. Online reviewers were mostly happy with the wine curation, but they were disappointed with the results.

In recent years, food-delivery companies have also entered the wine subscription service. Blue Apron and HelloFresh both offer wine subscriptions in addition to their meal delivery services. Blue Apron’s half liter offerings are typically more expensive than HelloFresh. However, both have a strong hit or miss reputation and don’t take your palate into account by only providing meal pairings. This is why they didn’t make our list.

We loved Pour This, the boutique wine offerings from Ashley Ragovin, but her subscription has been discontinued. As an alternative, we looked into SommSelect’s monthly wine club. However, its selection is closer to Ragovin’s than Ragovin’s rare finds.

How we evaluated wine subscriptions and wine clubs

Our picks were based on personal experience and in-depth reviews from industry experts. We also consulted third-party review platforms such TrustPilot, HighYa and HighYa to get customer reviews. To help you find the best wine subscriptions, we considered customer service, ease-of-use navigation, and variety of wines. Although we have not tried every service, we will keep you updated as we test them.

FAQs about the best wine subscriptions

Is wine less expensive when you buy it online?

It depends. It all depends. Wine is very expensive in New York City. I find it easier to find the best wine online than I can in the local grocery stores. Winc and Firstleaf are two of the most well-known services. They offer great plans that deliver great bottles starting at $13. It is almost impossible to find good wine at a reasonable price in my local stores so I prefer buying wine online.

Can wine clubs be cancelled?

No. Although we haven’t tried every wine club, most of them allow you to cancel your subscription at no charge. Before you sign up, make sure you read all terms and conditions. Some services may allow you to commit up to three or six month in advance. It may be difficult to cancel your commitment once it is complete.

How do you choose the best wine club for you?

It is possible to ask the first question. YouHere are some questions that go beyond red, white or sparkling. Are you looking for a wine service that is highly curated? YourDo you have any particular preferences or favorite wine types? Do you prefer to try new wines over your usual wines? Perhaps you’d like to hear from a master sommelier about their thoughts and tasting notes for certain wines. Are you looking for premium wines or bottles of artisanal specialties, or both? There are also vegan wines and organic wines. Each niche wine club specializes in these wines. You must first decide how much a good-quality bottle should cost. Our list will help you to choose the best wine club or subscription.
